Chapter 10

“Time to track down Luciana Farrow’s mother,” I said to Lola after we had dropped of Hip-hop at the loft, leaving grams fussing over her and reading lines to her.

We got on the tube, heading back to North London to an address in the case file where we hoped Mrs Farrow still lived.

It was the evening peak rush hour and the tube was crammed full of people. Lola and I were unable to speak without being overheard by every stranger and his mother.

I got out my phone and looked through some case notes again. The more I looked at them, the more my mind might be able to piece stuff together. Or so I hoped.

“It wasn’t him,” said Lola to me quietly.

I looked up at her guiltily, and then stuffed my phone back into my pocket.

“I didn’t say it was,” I said to her quietly, keeping it cryptic for the sake of the passengers close by. Too close in some cases. Some guy holding onto an overhead rail seemed determined for his armpit to make friends with my face.

We both knew what we were talking about. She was telling me that JJ was not the murderer.

“I saw what you were looking at on your phone,” she said.

I bit my lip. I had been re-reading a witness statement from one of Cade’s neighbours, the old woman who had also heard the scream on the morning of the murder.

She had complained to the police officers that a dark-haired teenage boy came and went from Cade’s house on a regular basis. The police had not followed up on this, since they already had Cade as a suspect. But I was definitely interested in finding out who this teenager had been.

JJ had been a teenager back then. JJ had brown hair.

“What reason would JJ have for coming and going from Cade’s house so frequently?” said Lola.

I shrugged. “Maybe he was coming to see his sister. Maybe he helped to babysit Cade’s baby.”

“Not JJ,” said Lola. “If he had been a teenage babysitter, believe me I would have got that out of him by now.”

She smiled fondly, thinking of her big husky werewolf boyfriend babysitting a tiny little girl.

She was right. JJ was into his motorbike and sports and hanging out with his boys and partying at the club with his hot chick Lola. I couldn’t imagine him looking after a kid, especially not when he had been a teenager.

“Maybe he came to shoot some hoops on those basketball courts,” I said.

The minute I said it, I wished I hadn’t, because Lola looked upset.

“I didn’t mean it like that,” I said hastily, giving her hand a reassuring squeeze. I whispered, “I don’t want to believe it’s him either. It’s just that the police never investigated any other suspects, so we’ve got so little to go on. I guess my mind keeps coming back to the only two people that I do know were close to Cade. I’m just acting on incomplete information. I really hope that JJ has nothing to do with this.
